Healthcare for all would reduce gender-based injustice

International Women's Day (March 8th) offers us an opportunity to draw attention to how our society depends on the labour of racialized migrant women both at work – especially in the caring professions – and in the home. Despite this, thousands of these women are denied basic access to healthcare because of their immigration status.

Maria is one of these women, and in this video, she shares her story. After suffering an accident at work, Maria was faced with hundreds of dollars in medical bills that were impossible to pay. The fact that women like Maria are forced to endure such significant and avoidable emotional, financial, and physical suffering should anger us all.

Extending healthcare to everyone living or working in Ontario would save lives, and is an important means of addressing race and gender-based inequality in our society.

Our workplaces, schools, places of worship, and society are healthier and safer when everyone is able to get the care that they need. We need to act now, before more lives are lost to health conditions that could have been prevented.
