All we do is win - now let’s win paid sick days!
by Matthew Pi
Education workers across the province showed the power we have when we unite and fight back.
As millions of students head back to the classrooms today after a historic strike, it’s important to remember that many of their parents remain unable to access paid sick days.
We just witnessed the provincial government acting swiftly to demobilize workers fighting for decent work. Where was this determination when thousands of essential, low-wage workers were exposed to COVID-19 at work due to lack of access to paid sick days?
This government came after non-unionized workers first when they canceled the two permanent paid sick days and $15 minimum wage in 2018. And now, with a disastrous three years of the pandemic and a healthcare system on the brink of collapse, patients in low-wage jobs still do not have protections.

In just two weeks, the provincial government will be debating life-saving legislation: Bill 4, Stay Home If You Are Sick Act, 2022. This bill would immediately legislate 10 permanent paid sick days plus 14 during public health emergencies.
We need your help to make sure we send a clear message to every politician in the provincial legislature that they have an opportunity to save countless lives.
This Thursday, November 10, we will be taking actions across the province to demand that our MPPs vote YES to Bill 4.
We could really use your help to make this day of action a success. Can you post a photo of yourself with a sign calling on politicians in the province to legislate paid sick days?
Lastly, we are just a week away from the end of the Workers Bowl fundraiser - which our team, Guts Not Gutters, is currently in the lead for. I would really appreciate it if you could help make 2022 the year health workers win the Workers Bowl by making a donation to my Workers’ Bowl page here. These donations go directly to creating leadership opportunities for low-waged workers through the Workers Action Centre.
Thank you for your ongoing support and we can’t wait to see how folks contribute to Thursday’s day of action.
