We need prevention, not privatization.

This week, the provincial government came back to work and immediately denied the reality of our healthcare system in crisis. We have been out here dealing with ICU and ER closures, massive burnout of healthcare staff, and lack of 10 permanent paid sick days.
Minister of Health Sylvia Jones had the audacity to state that it was "inappropriate" to say there was a crisis in healthcare. What's actually inappropriate is that this government is hinting at the privatization of healthcare while I see patients show up in the emergency department with preventable diseases that should have never reached such a state of urgency.
We need prevention, not privatization. Evidence supports that paid sick days promote preventive care and create savings in the healthcare system. We know that privatization is not the right approach. Private long-term care homes had higher mortality rates during the pandemic while public and non-profit homes were better able to protect both employees and residents. If this government is truly “considering all options” then they must focus on the equitable solutions at hand - that means immediately legislating 10 permanent paid sick days.

Earlier this week we showed up alongside our allies to the Ontario Federation of Labour’s rally at Queen’s Park, demanding that the government legislate 10 permanent paid sick days immediately. This is just the beginning. We will not sit still and watch our public health care collapse while the government ignores effective policy.
Join Justice for Workers on August 23 at 7:00pm for a provincial Decent Work Organizing Meeting (online) where we will plan next steps on winning 10 permanent paid sick days in the face of this crisis in healthcare.

This is a crucial moment and we need all hands on deck. I am glad that I can count on you.
